Krakend IJs

‘Krakend ijs breekt niet’, loosely translates to ‘singing ice won’t break’, a common Dutch saying about ice-skating on lakes or canals. This award-winning short film captures the essence of the Dutch ice-skating tradition.

In the Netherlands, winter can be quite grey and cold. The wind and many currents make it difficult for canals to freeze up, but when it happens, the Dutch ice skating heritage is alive as can be.

The cravings to be gliding for miles often push people to venture onto ‘thin ice’, and not even the possibility of hypothermia can stop them on their quest for freedom.
